What’s better than a tub (or two) of home-delivered Häagen-Dazs? Home-delivered zero-waste packaging, Häagen-Dazs, duhhh!
Thanks to a newish platform called Loop, the world’s biggest brands like Häagen-Dazs, The Body Shop and Colgate, are saying “see ya” to single-use plastic and opting to sell their products like toothpaste in reusable and returnable containers.
What started off as an experiment in May 2019, turned out to be exactly what companies and consumers wanted and needed. For companies, Loop helps to reduced packaging and waste problems, and for customers, the platform offers customers their beloved brands and a clear conscience.

So, you might be asking, how does this work? And the answer is rather straightforward. Do you remember back in the days, before Instagram? The milkman would deliver your milk and collect the empty bottles and payment from your porch? Well, it’s kinda like that.
How it works:
Order goods online.
Goods are delivered in a Loop Tote
Use the product.
Put the empty containers back in the Loop Tote, UPS collects them.
Loop cleans, reuses and refills the containers.
The loop begins again.
At this point you might be thinking about the (environmental) cost that comes with the transporting and cleaning of the heavier containers, and how this too could be detrimental to the environment. And on this, we agree. However, the good news is… Loop is decreasing the carbon footprint by cutting out single-use packaging, and more importantly, ensuring that plastic packaging stays out of landfills and the ocean!
Sadly, the best things in life are not free and doing right by the environment will cost you a pretty penny. Like many sustainable and zero-waste products, you can expect a higher price point. For example, if you were to buy a 4 fl. oz. cup of Häagen-Dazs from your local online supermarket, you would expect to spend roughly $3.88. But if you were to buy the same size tub from Loop, it would cost you $6.49, plus a $5.00 one time fully refundable deposit (and let’s not get into the delivery fee).
That being said, the point of Loop is not to swindle customers, nor is it to make them feel like they would save money by shopping at their local grocery store. Instead, Loop tries to eliminate waste by ending single-use plastic. And for this, we can say that we SI you, and we know that in time people will be less hung-up on the price and more passionate about making the environment a better place for everyone.
Loop currently has over 150 products to choose from, ranging from grocery products to household and personal care products. At the moment, they only operate in parts of Europe, mainly Paris, the U.K., and Germany, as well as a few cities in the U.S. and Canada, and Japan. There are exciting times ahead for customers in Australia. As of this year, Aussies can also get in the Loop.
