Description
Introducing the Limited Edition Basotho inspired SoulShooz Bosiu.
The SoulShooz Bosiu is our take on a Basotho Imbadada.
Behind the culture
The Basotho AKA Sotho people are a Bantu nation native to southern Africa. They spoke Sotho and traditionally lived in Lesotho, South Africa, Botswana and Eswatini. Sesotho is one of South Africa’s eleven official languages and is spoken, as a first language, by almost 4 million people.
Behind the design
In the 1840s, visiting missionaries gifted King Moshoeshoe an indigo-printed cloth. The King loved the fabric, and it quickly became a thing of beauty among the Sotho and Zulu people in his kingdom. The indigo-printed material and the King Moshoeshoe influenced what is today known as ‘shweshwe’. The beloved fabric comes in many different colours and designs and continues to grow in popularity.
Behind the name
King Moshoeshoe, the founder of the Kingdom of Lesotho, was born at Menkhoaneng, aka northern Lesotho. In 1820, he set up his village, consisting of various groups, including those displaced by the Zulu conquest. Moshoeshoe and his people migrated to Thaba Bosiu (mountain) some 50 years later on the 11th of March 1870, the King died and was laid to rest on Thaba Bosiu.
Like many of our designs, we aim to celebrate and pay homage to the culture of those who have worked to develop, preserve and share it with the world; that’s why we always give credit where credit is due.
We hope you enjoy your Sotho-inspired SOULSHOOZ Bosiu and have learned something about the Sotho culture.
